Second Violin is another in John Lawton's excellent Inspector Troy series. In this genre there is none better than Lawton with his wonderful English writing style and first hand knowledge of the setting and the history. In reading this book it would be useful to have read some of the previous volumes in the series/5().

John Lawton confused most followers of the Inspector Troy series by not publishing the books in chronological order. SECOND VIOLIN is the sixth book in the Inspector Frederick Troy series to be published but it is a prequel and as such it should be the first book read by 4/5.

John Lawton is the author of ten novels, including Second Violin, Flesh Wounds, and Bluffing Mr. thriller Black Out won a WH Smith Fresh Talent Award, A Little White Death was named a New York Times Notable Book, and his latest novel A Lily of the Field was named one of the best thrillers of the year by Marilyn Stasio of the New York Times/5().

I found the Second Violin fascinating. True it dealt with the horrors of the Third Reich without pulling any punches but I do not think it does any of us any harm to be reminded of the consequences of racism and bigotry. If you enjoy stories based around the Second World War you will enjoy this audio book.

By: The book follows two characters - Meret Voytek, a talented young cellist living in Vienna at the novel's start, and Dr. Karel Szabo, a Hungarian physicist interned in a camp on the Isle of Man. In his seventh Inspector Troy novel, Lawton moves seamlessly from Vienna and Auschwitz to the deserts.

The second half of the book might as well be another book (and it is labeled as such in The Second Violin book edition I read). Suddenly Charlotte is a few years older, and getting married, and this half of the book covers her first year of married life, Charlotte plays second fiddle to everyone in the /5.

The book then produces a serial killer (of London East End rabbis) that swings the lime light to newly-minted Police Sergeant Freddie Troy, the series mainstay. "Second Violin" is right up there with author John Lawton's best writing, but has some original and creative story elements that give it special zip and interest.5/5(4).
